2002 Research

802.11b Survey of NYC:

Summary of our research survey results:
The objective of the research was to create a large (~1,000,000 data points), statistically significant, low error data set of the 802.11b Access Points in NYC. More specifically, the coordinates (GPS long/lat) of as many 802.11b wireless access points as identifiable from the street level.

To achieve this goal it was necessary to drive every street in the borough of Manhattan, with the exception of areas that were closed to vehicle traffic due to police or construction (WTC and Wall Street).

Manhattan was selected as the research area because it contains a significant distribution of socioeconomic stratifications of modern society and represents the earliest of all adopters. The research reflects the adoption of 802.11b wireless usage across a wide variety of zoning districts and economically diverse populations.

Our groundbreaking and highly publicized (Wired.com and the New York Times) research study reveals exactly how 802.11b technology adoption is occurring, by whom it is being utilized, and where it is being accessed.

In short, our research provides a one of a kind look into the utilization of wireless technologies in daily consumer life. There is no other research as extensive or complete that has been conducted to date.
